Opening Up The Files On The Boston Celtics

Joe Mazzulla shows playoff rotation in first round

The Boston Celtics easily took a Game 1 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday afternoon at the TD Garden to the tune of a 13-point victory of 112-99.

The Celtics held a 30-point lead in this game and looked to be in total control on both ends of the court. If Game 1 was any indication of how Boston will play the rest of the series, round one will be wrapped up quickly.

Head coach Joe Mazzulla set his playoff rotation for round one regarding matchups. In doing so, Grant Williams earned a DNPCD, which was shocking to say the least. But we’ve seen this before during the regular season when it comes to matching up Grant to opposing teams.

Utilizing Rob Williams in an accessory role off the bench made a huge difference. His presence alone on the court was game changing, as Trae Young avoided the paint with Rob on the court. Not to mention the lob opportunities were there for him when he wanted it.

Having Rob off the bench pairs him with Malcolm Brogdon on the floor, which the two of them can run the floor together for the Celtics. Brogdon struggled in the first game, but you could see the defense respect him for the entire game despite not shooting well. That element alone continues to space the floor for Boston.

I highly doubt Grant gets DNPCD’s throughout the entire first round, that seems unlikely. However, the matchup pairings is a real thing for Mazzulla and Grant doesn’t fit this mold as well as other players.

Sam Hauser earned the nod in Game 1 for his ability to move and shoot, further creating space as he’s a respected 3-point shooter.

Lastly, it’s worth mentioning that utilizing Rob off the bench could cut into Grant’s minutes. However, I do agree with Mazzulla on the matchup situation playing a factor here.

Game 2 from the TD Garden will tipoff at 7:00 PM.
