The Boston Celtics have some roster issues to work out after losing in the Conference Finals in seven games, with the same core group, and making the same mistakes as they have been for years now.
The Phoenix Suns intend to waive Chris Paul, making him a free agent or create a sign and trade so they can get something in return for him.
FS1’s Colin Cowherd believes a trade between the Celtics and Suns would be great trade partners, exchanging guards in Marcus Smart and Chris Paul.
“Marcus Smart is exactly what Phoenix needs because of Kevin Durant’s history of breaking down. They need a guy that’s younger, plays 65-70 games along with Booker and Deandre Ayton. So when KD gets hurt, they’ve got their other three stars: Ayton, Smart and Booker. He’s also tough, he’s physical. I think Phoenix could use some of that.”
There were moments in the season where the Celtics looked like they had no direction and it only magnified in the playoffs. Cowherd thinks having a veteran offensive-minded guard like Paul would benefit the Celtics greatly.
Marcus Smart: 11.5 points, 3.1 rebounds, 6.3 assists on 42/34/75 splits.
Chris Paul: 13.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, 8.9 assists on 44/38/83 splits.
The Celtics do have an already crowded guard room and are fully prepared to run it back if they feel it’s they’re best option. Derrick White is an All-NBA defender, Malcolm Brogdon is the Sixth Man of the Year, and Smart is the leader of the team.
Smart’s assists have increased and been better since he became the starting point guard over the last two years. But being able to organize the floor isn’t his greatest strength for this team.
It’ll be interesting to see if the Celtics make a change to their guard position this offseason.
