Opening Up The Files On The Boston Celtics

Marcus Smart is going to let the coaches coach next season

The Boston Celtics added two coaches to join Joe Mazzulla next season, bringing in two coaches with championship pedigree in Sam Cassell and Charles Lee.

Boston’s longest tenured player Marcus Smart is excited about the coaching additions, as he tells SI.

“I’m very excited about Coach Cassell and Coach Lee coming on board. Both have championship pedigree and know what it takes to get there. Coach Cassell won three championships as a player, and Coach Lee won with the Bucks. Hopefully, the Boston Celtics are next!”

There were moments last season where it looked like Smart freelanced and did whatever he through was best for the team, despite what coach Mazzulla wanted.

Smart’s intentions are always team-first and he has his heart in the right place. However, this offseason, Smart’s already expressed that he’s a “player and not a coach”.

“I am a player, not the coach. I try and give my input when it’s needed or when they ask, but I try and leave the play calling to the staff. They did a fantastic job last year of putting us in the right place to succeed.”

It’s uncertain what Boston’s roster will look like for the 2023-24 season, but it’s fair to say with the new coaching additions and the savvy roster building of Brad Stevens, the Celtics will be in a great position moving forward next season.
