Opening Up The Files On The Boston Celtics

Grant Williams understands it won’t be easy for him to re-sign in Boston

The Boston Celtics are between a rock and a hard place this summer as we’ve already seen them trade Marcus Smart to Memphis in order to acquire Kristaps Porzingis.

The next line of business is to figure out what the plan is for Grant Williams, who’s ready to start taking orders this summer as a restricted free agent.

The Celtics are already over their allotted cap space and are likely set to pay a luxury tax bill for it. They simply don’t have the cap space to re-sign him right now and he knows that.

Here’s what Grant said about his current situation with the Celtics:

“Whatever happens, you know? I don’t have much control in this because I allow my agents and everyone else to focus on that because my whole focus has always been winning and making sure that teams’ success is the No. 1 most important thing. And Brad and those guys, if they decide to keep me and bring me back, of course I’m going to come back and be excited and happy and ready to play for the Celtics.”

“If something else happens and I , you know, have to transition. But for me my outlook has always been that I want to make sure that wherever I am I want to impact the success of winning and make sure that I’m there for the players that are around me. Focus on the team first. Whatever happens in free agency will be that.”

After acquiring Porzingis and considering the way Grant was utilized last season, it’s fair to say the writing could be on the wall for him in Boston.

Grant is going to be given an offer sheet that is too rich for the Celtics to match and too rich for Grant to turn down.

As he said: “it’s a decision of whether or not it’s needed.” when talking about his future in Boston.
