The Boston Celtics finally made their decision to part ways with Grant Williams, as the team agreed to a sign-and-trade of four-years worth $54 million with the Dallas Mavericks.
The Celtics only received multiple second round picks in exchange for Williams, but they did create a $6.2 million TPE in the process.
Williams has been fortunate to spend the first four years of his career playing alongside of Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, two All-NBA players.
After being traded to Dallas, an excited Williams said this to The Athletic about what he thought about the move:
“The talent on this team is absurd. Kyrie and Luka, being able to put two superstars of that nature, two top 10 players or whatever you want to say, Kyrie is one of the best point guards in the league still.”
Williams went through it all during his time in Boston. He missed his first 25 3-point attempts, which had many people wondering if he’d be able ti hit the big shot.
He followed through by connecting on seven 3’s in a Game 7 against the Bucks and becoming one of the better 3-point shooters in the NBA (41.1% in 2021-22 & 39.5 in 2022-23).
Grant’s claim to fame in the league, however, is for being an elite defender against some of the best players the NBA has to offer, specifically being Kevin Durant and Giannis Antetokunmpo.
And we’ll all remember when he went toe-to-toe with Jimmy Butler during a game the C’s desperately needed a spark from someone, it was Grant who provided it.
Along with the ups and downs and the highs and lows of a season, Grant heard and took a lot from the fans, to which he’s looking forward to a new fanbase in Dallas.
“I’m excited to go to a new city, to embrace the new culture and fans.”
I understand the excitement but it’s not like he hasn’t played with two of the top players at their positions before in Tatum and Brown. It seemed like he was taking a jab at the Celtics regarding the talent level.
Grant played well for Boston. I personally though the Celtics would’ve matched an offer sheet up to $14 million to retain Grant but it turned out the $12.4 million MLE was too rich for the Celtics’ liking.
I wish Grant well, the Mavericks are getting a legitimate role player that’s starting caliber in Grant. It was a great trade for Dallas.
