The Boston Celtics have hit many nails on the head this summer. Starting with retooling the entire roster and coaching staff, Brad Stevens is a man with a plan entering his third year as president of basketball operations.
Stevens started the offseason by trading Marcus Smart to the Grizzlies in a three team trade to land Kristaps Porzingis from the Wizards and agree to a two-year extension worth $60 million, parting ways with Mike Muscala and Danilo Gallinari along the way.
During the NBA Draft, Brad Stevens turned the No. 26 pick into the No. 38 pick after making four trades and jumping around the draft board. Jordan Walsh has been impressive this summer and is proving to be a do-it-all player, which the Celtics need.
Shortly after the draft, Stevens traded away Grant Williams to the Mavericks for a set of second round picks.
When free agency opened, Stevens added Dalano Banton (6-foot-9) and Oshae Brissett (6-foot-7), two players with size that can play between two through four positionally.
After two Summer League games, the Celtics saw enough to re-sign JD Davison to another two-way contract. It’ll be his second consecutive season on a two-way as he continues to improve and take advantage of this opportunity in Maine.
It’s worth mentioning Boston still has two more two-way contracts to offer as the NBA is allowing teams to carry three this year. Players like Jay Scrubb and Udoka Azubuike could be candidates for that.
The elephant in the room has been the supermax contract that Jaylen Brown has been eligible for two weeks now and hasn’t been offered yet. The bright side is that Stevens is “optimistic” about getting a deal done with Brown.
Other notes:
Stevens mentioned wanting to “add a little bit” to the wing depth but there are currently two roster spots available as Boston has one open and Justin Champagnie on a non-guaranteed contract with an Aug. 1 deadline.
