Opening Up The Files On The Boston Celtics

Can the Celtics let Jay Scrubb slip away from them after his impressive summer performance?

The Boston Celtics have tinkered with a few ideas this summer that we’re seeing in place during their Summer League. One of the interesting storylines from this summer team has been Jay Scrubb and what the Celtics intend to do with him.

Scrubb started in junior college and was named Division I Player of the Year as a sophomore before declaring for the NBA Draft where he was selected 55th overall by the Brooklyn Nets in 2020 and then traded to the Los Angeles Clippers where he signed a two-way contract.

Two years later, Scrubb signed a GLeague contract with the Lakeland Magic which was converted to a two-way deal with the Orlando Magic. He was then waived by Orlando, allowing the Celtics to add him to their summer team.

In the GLeague last year, Scrubb averaged 21.8 points per game on 45 percent shooting from the field on 7.8 made baskets per night. His clip of 28.9 percent from behind the arc is far from impressive but it’s not anything that can’t be improved during time in Boston.

In the last four games, Scrubb has been nothing short of impressive and consistent during his run with the Celtics, scoring at least 15-points in each of the four games this summer.

The Celtics are searching to add players with size and versatility, which Scrubb provides at 6-foot-5 and 220 pounds. He focuses on offense and setting the pace but he can be a dawg on defense and make plays on that end as well.

Boston has some availability on their 15-man roster but Scrubb earned one of the two open two-way contracts the Celtics have, which was reported just before the start of tip-off and announced by the team after the game.

Scrubb has certainly looked comfortable, confident, and poised running on the court for the Celtics this summer.
