The Boston Celtics traded Grant Williams to the Dallas Mavericks for a set of second round draft picks, which has been acknowledged as insufficient for what Grant brings to the table by many fans of the team.
The Celtics drafted and developed Grant into the player they needed him to be. He became an elite defender and consistent 3-point shooter during his time in Boston, averaging 37.9 percent from behind the arc and 45.1 percent from the field overall.
Williams exceeded expectations on both ends of the court and became a true 3-and-D player in the NBA. His claim to fame was in a 2022 Game 7 vs the Milwaukee Bucks when he scored 27-points on seven made 3-pointers.
Reporters and analysts close to the team have been indifferent on the Grant trade due to the return of only two second round draft picks and a $6.2 million TPE that’ll likely be used as a tool down the road.
“I’m not crazy about the deal for the Celtics. I would have demanded a first round pick. But to give up Grant, who can be a pretty great player when he’s playing well- hits the 3, defending- for future second round picks just doesn’t do a lot for me… I’m not excited about this deal.” – Gary Washburn
It’s worth mentioning that the writing was on the wall for Grant in Boston, who was phased out of the rotation before the playoffs began.
Furthermore, the Celtics traded Grant after they had already acquired Kristaps Porzingis, which cemented his time in Boston as complete.
The return for Grant has left many people feeling indifferent. However, we’re seeing second round picks being used as currency around the NBA with the new CBA taking place. Not to mention, Boston also unlocked a TPE which can help them down the road.
