Blake Griffin was the veteran presence that this Celtics team needed the most. A guy who was once at the top of NBA superstardom to be on a team of two aspiring superstars in Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown was a perfect match for Boston.
Griffin provided energy on and off the court for the Celtics last season. In 41 total games for Boston, Griffin averaged 48.5 percent shooting from the field and 34.8 percent from behind the arc while also logging 16 starts along the way.
Griffin quickly became a fan favorite and made his way around the city to other sporting events and concerts with his teammates.
The six-time all-star signed a one-year contract worth 2.9 million with Boston for 2022-23 and is currently an unrestricted free agent.
NBC Sports Boston Celtics insider Chris Forsberg believes that Griffin will re-sign with the Celtics sometime in September or closer to the end of training camp, as he told Brian Robb on The Winning Plays Podcast.
“When Blake signs in September. Blake probably wants to wait until after training camp to sign.”
When I asked Celtics fans if they’d want to see Griffin back in Boston, it saw a ton of traction all with the same answer: yes.
If Forsberg is right, we still have a near two months before we’ll see Griffin sign a new deal with Boston. But it is not AT ALL out of the question.
