The Boston Celtics received a sense of deja vu when it was announced that newly acquired big man Kristaps Porzingis was injured while preparing for the FIBA World Cup with his native of Latvia.
Porzingis was diagnosed with a swollen foot which translates to plantar fasciitis according to journalist Rupert Fabig, who first broke the news on Porzingis’ injury, said to me about the discovery of this injury.
Latvia National Team head coach Luca Banchi recently said he was frustrated to find out the news because he wasn’t expecting Porzingis to miss the tournament.
“It was frustrating because I always hoped that things would work out, even a few days before we started playing, and without being able to get him to work together with the team.”
This entire situation seems fishy but I find it surprising that Banchi had the impression that Porzingis would be able to play for Latvia this summer after talking with the Celtics and even after Porzingis withdrew himself from the tournament.
Fabig also told me that the Latvian National Team and Federation wasn’t pleased with the shape of Porzingis and even said he arrived to them this summer with the “inflamed foot” that has turned into plantar fasciitis.
I told him it was “interesting to hear” because at Porzingis’ press conference in Boston, it was led on to believe he was in the best shape of his career coming off a season he played in the most games (65) since 2016-17.

From other reports, Porzingis has opted to stay with Latvia to be with family and friends prior to the start of the Celtics camp and practices he’ll likely be required to go to.
In all, the only good thing is that Porzingis isn’t going to be on a court unless it’s in a Celtics jersey. But this truly has been an odd situation for a newly acquired player.
