The Boston Celtics signed Svi Mykhailiuk to a one-year deal to add depth to the wing position. Mykhailiuk is a 6-foot-7 journeyman elite shooter who’s now on his seventh team in six years.
It’s worth mentioning before he agreed to sign with Boston, Mykhailiuk was being targeted by other NBA teams and also by Panathinaikos Athens in Greece, which reports show that he had a high interest in going to.
What can Mykhailiuk provide for the Celtics as the 14th man on Boston’s roster this season? Let’s get to know Svi more and what he brings to the table for the C’s.
Mykhailiuk was born in the Ukraine, beginning his career in 2012 by playing for Cherkaski Mavpy in the Ukrainian Basketball SuperLeague and for the Ukrainian national team at the 2014 Fiba World Cup.
Svi was essentially a professional prior to going to Kansas, where he spent four years playing college basketball in the Big 12 from 2014-18 and became the youngest player in Big 12 conference history at only 17-years-old.
In four years at Kansas, Mykhailiuk averaged 8.7 points per game on 42.8 percent shooting from the field, 40.9 percent from behind the 3-point arc, and 74.6 percent from the free throw line. This production would get him drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in the second round of the 2018 NBA Draft (47th overall).
Mykhailiuk’s production in college would transfer to the NBA. He’s averaged 40/36/76 shooting splits during the first five years of his career in the NBA. His shooting skills and shot creation are the most appealing factors of his game but Mykhailiuk is also a solid passer and keeps the ball moving to make plays.
The offensive game that Mykhailiuk possesses can separate himself from the other players in front of him on Boston’s bench, as he has more shot creation abilities than Sam Hauser and arguably Oshae Brissett, however, Brissett is the more capable defender out of this group.
That said, it’ll be the defensive side of the court that is going to get anybody minutes on this team. Both Hauser and Brissett should be in front of Mykhailiuk on the depth chart but don’t be surprised to see the 14th man on the court often this season.
It’s worth mentioning that Boston signed Mykhailiuk over TJ Warren, Lamar Stevens, Louis King, and Greg Robinson III after they all worked out for the Celtics this summer.
The Celtics clearly don’t want to be without Mykhailiuk’s specialty this season and it’s quite impressive to see that the 14th man on the roster is in a legitimate position to take minutes from the eighth or ninth man on the roster.
Brad Stevens has often left an available roster spot open throughout the season for roster flexibility for a couple of years now. It’s a technique that’ll allow him to easily add another player if needed. However this offer to Svi has been on the table for a while now.
This is likely the roster Boston opens the season with and it’s a good one. If there is a final move for the Celtics to make before the season, I think it will be to re-sign Blake Griffin.
