Opening Up The Files On The Boston Celtics

Takeaways from Celtics Media Day

Over the years, Media Day is almost a holiday in Boston. It’s the first opportunity for the fans to hear from the entire team, from the GM and head coach to just about every player on the Celtics.

After spending about five hours of preparation for Media Day, the overall takeaway I have from this team is optimism.

Every player is eager and ready to show what they can bring to the table as there’s a lot of new players on the roster this season.

The first free agent the Celtics acquired this offseason was Oshae Brissett, who expressed the winning culture and vibes he already feels is a different feeling than what he’s been part of before.

Although it cost the Celtics Robert Williams and Malcolm Brogdon, the team is still very optimistic and excited for the addition of Jrue Holiday, as every player who was asked talked about the character he has as a person.

Team GM Brad Stevens referred to the Holiday addition as “a gift” and head coach Joe Mazzulla said he is “grateful” to have him.

Team leaders Jayson Tatum said he is “very fortunate” to have Holiday while Jaylen Brown said it’ll be a “tremendous honor” to play alongside him.

Obviously the elephant in the room today at Media Day was the decision to include Robert Williams in the trade for Holiday. When asked, Stevens addressed the difficulty in making the decision but the return for Holiday was too good to pass up.

“Guys like Jrue Holiday are the only reason you entertain moving on from a guy like Rob.”

The other part of this trade positively impacts backup guard Payton Pritchard, who is likely to be on the court more this season, to which Mazzulla said he’s excited to see. Pritchard, on the other hand, is looking forward to learning from Holiday while adding a different element to the position that is different from Derrick White and Holiday.

Rookie Jordan Walsh was excited about his first Media Day and said he’s going to continue playing the way he always has which is being loud and aggressive when he’s on the court. He also talks about learning from Al Horford both on and off the court.

Throughout Media Day, Mazzulla and most of the players talked about regaining their true defensive identity and perhaps focusing more on that end of the court more. Also adding that he didn’t think he had to remind the players to play defense.

Overall, the entire Celtics team is optimistic about the season ahead and the are eager for it to begin. That said, the preparation begins tomorrow (Oct. 3) when training camp begins.

Other takeaways:

  • Oshae Brissett wants to bring energy on both ends of the court.
  • Dalano Banton wants to make passes like Rajon Rondo.
  • Luke Kornet and Kristaps Porzingis were teammates in New York and Kornet said he forgot how tall KP is.
  • Jordan Walsh takes fashion advice from Al Horford, who has taken him under his wing.
  • Brad Stevens says Jrue Holiday made it to the gym before he did this morning, also adding that he won’t be able to participate in team activities until the physicals pass through on both ends of the trade.
