The Boston Celtics concluded their final day of training camp today as they prepare to take on a preseason that consists of three games in four nights against the Philadelphia 76ers and New York Knicks.
Here are some notes/takeaways from media day and training camp:
- There’s a lot of new players in Boston this season as GM Brad Stevens cleaned up and retooled the roster. The addition of Kristaps Porzingis was the “curveball” head coach Joe Mazzulla has been saying the team needs to alter the course of a game, especially late in the game.
- Jayson Tatum also said that there hasn’t been a player with the prowess of Porzingis during his time in Boston and mentions the impact that Porzingis is going to have in the low-post is a game changer in Boston this season.
- The other big addition of the offseason was a surprise trade acquisition for Jrue Holiday which completely altered the outlook of the Eastern Conference. Holiday is a championship point guard who’s been an All-NBA First Team defender in two out of the last three years. Having him on the court changes everything for Boston.
- This likely will slide Derrick White to the two despite Mazzulla naming him starting point guard at the beginning of the summer. Having both White and Holiday on the court together is going to be hard to pass by in a zone defense with those two at the top of it.
- Sam Hauser spoke today and said that they’re doing different things on offense and defense while also working on some things that they didn’t do too well last season. He also said that he believes Payton Pritchard is “out for blood” this season.
- Rookie Jordan Walsh was a standout in Summer League and continued to be so throughout training camp. Walsh understands he was the only draft pick the Celtics made this year and wants to show everyone that he was the right choice. He said that he’s going to bring the energy and be himself when he gets his opportunities this season.
- Some of the new players you’ll see this season is Oshae Brissett, Dalano Banton, Svi Mykhailiuk, Lamar Stevens, and Wenyen Gabriel who will round out Boston’s depth.
