Opening Up The Files On The Boston Celtics

Celtics hire Jeff Van Gundy to coaching staff as Senior Consultant advisory role this season

The Boston Celtics have hired Jeff Van Gundy to their coaching staff as a senior consultant in an advisory role for this season, multiple sources have confirmed.

Van Gundy wil be working under basketball operations closely to Brad Stevens and will also be splitting his time between Boston and Maine to work with the Celtics’ GLeague affiliate team, a source close to Brian Robb of MassLive.

Van Gundy is a former longtime head coach and most recently was with ESPN prior to being laid off by the network, which opened the door for him to get back into coaching.

In 11 seasons as a head coach, Van Gundy logged a 430-318 record with two teams (Rockets, Knicks) and helped the New York Knicks reach the NBA Finals in 1999.

Van Gundy is a great addition for the Celtics coaching staff and what seems to be the front office. Here’s what head coach Joe Mazzulla said about Van Gundy joining the team:

“Awesome. Anytime you can add high-character, high-level professional people, I think it’s a no-brainer. Fortunate enough that he’s here, not just for the coaching staff but for everybody and he’s been through every imaginable situation in the NBA. We’re lucky to have him. He’s a great listener and a great worker and so he’s added a lot of value even in the first couple of weeks he’s been here.”
