The Boston Celtics targeted a handful of players during the offseason who’ve recently had success against them. In doing so, Kristaps Porzingis, Dalano Banton, and Jrue Holiday all fall into this new trend for Boston and so does Svi Mykhailiuk.
Mykhailiuk is an NBA journeyman who’s been on six teams in five years. He’s played against the Celtics 10 times in his career, averaging 10.4 points while connecting on 43.6 percent of his 3-pointers.
The Celtics signed Mykhailiuk to a partially guaranteed contract and he’s only maximized his time on the court during the preseason to the point where it’ll be hard to see him not in Boston all season.
Mykhailiuk didn’t play in the first preseason game but he played in the following two and shined during his time on the court. He scored 15-points in both games while hitting 6-of-11 from behind the arc this preseason.
The Celtics had interest in Mykhailiuk since at least the end of July as there was a report that came out in the beginning of August by the Greek Publication Sports DNA saying that Mykhailiuk “for several days now, he has had an offer in his hands from the Celtics.”
Mykhailiuk’s offensive game is proven. He’s a shooting specialist from behind the arc but he showed that he can score in multiple ways so far during the preseason, including a huge put-back slam that has been the talk of the preseason for Boston.
The real debate of the preseason has been Sam Hauser vs Mykhailiuk, considering they both bring similar things to the table on offense but it’ll come down to who can hold their own on defense more consistently to earn the limited rotation minutes.
Nevertheless, it’s hard to imagine the Celtics parting ways with Mykhailiuk after what he’s shown to bring to the table for the team.
