Opening Up The Files On The Boston Celtics

Celtics Files: Injuries, Brown, Bench Players, Magic

The Boston Celtics dealt with a handful of injuries on Friday night against the Orlando Magic. This elevated Lamar Stevens and Oshae Brissett into the game for some legitimate minutes for the first time in about a month for both of them.

Stevens was named a starter with Kristaps Porzingis, Al Horford, and Luke Kornet all on the sidelines. He finished with four points, one rebound, one assist, one block, and one steal in just under nine minutes of play. It was the most he’s played all season.

Brissett saw 15.5 minutes off the bench and scored 11-points on 4-of-4 shooting. He added one rebound and an assist as well in his first real minutes in over a month.

Head coach Joe Mazzulla only uses a three or four man rotation on most nights, leaving out Brissett and Stevens more often than not. But to see the two free agent signings come in and be true professionals in their roles is great for this team.

Payton Pritchard and Sam Hauser have become the leaders of the second unit in a way that many people didn’t expect to happen, but Mazzulla has empowered them and he’s always known they’d be great rotation players.

“I coached them both in Summer League, so I’ve always known they were going to be great rotation players, and I had full confidence in them last year, and full confidence in them this year.”

Pritchard is averaging 6.5 points per game on 40 percent shooting from the floor and Sam Hauser is averaging 9.6 points per game while shooting 45.8 percent from behind the arc.

Jaylen Brown was tagged with right knee hypertension on Boston’s injury report but he played in the game on Friday and isn’t listed on the report for Sunday against the Magic at home again.

Jrue Holiday ranks 40th all-time in NBA history with 5,974 career assists. There’s a real chance for him to get over 6,025 assists this season, which will put him under John Havlicek in the all-time list.

Lastly, Boston remains the only undefeated team on their home court this season at a perfect 13-0.
