The Boston Celtics have the best record in the NBA through the first 29 games of the season at 23-6. Despite being the best team, it hasn’t deterred the Celtics from upgrading the team if the opportunity presents itself. According to a report from Marc Stein, the Celtics are one of many teams “monitoring” the situation with the Utah Jazz and Kelly Olynyk leading up to the trade deadline in February.
Olynyk is in the final year of his contract that’s inked for $12,195,122 this season and could be a player Utah makes available at the deadline this trade season as he’s likely not in the plans for Utah’s rebuild. He’s averaging 7.9 points per game on 54.9 percent shooting from the field and 41.8 percent from 3-point distance in 21.9 minutes off the bench.
This wouldn’t be the first time the Celtics have been linked to Olynyk. In fact, as recent as last year’s trade deadline, it was reported that the Celtics were interested in trading for Olynyk.
Although he would be a great addition for the bench, his contract is just too large for Boston to work a deal with. Looking at the contracts outside of the Celtics top six players, the next largest contract is Payton Pritchard at just over $4 million.
Trading for a player that has financial value is going to be challenging for the Celtics to do. If they want to add, it’s best they utilize the $6.2 million TPE that was created from the Grant Williams trade.
Brad Stevens will certainly make an addition to the roster. The center position has been the big question all season but Neemias Queta has shown to be a productive piece for this team in the nine games he’s played in while on a two-way contract this season.
Perhaps it’s another guard that Stevens wants to add for additional playmaking purposes on the second unit and/or if one of Jrue Holiday or Derrick White misses time as the season progresses.
