Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla was named the Coach of the Month for the Eastern Conference during the month of December. The Celtics finished an NBA-best 12-2 during the month and also went 8-1 against .500 or better teams.
This is Mazzulla’s second career Coach of the Month honor, which is tied for the third-most in franchise history, behind Doc Rivers (6) and Brad Stevens (3). When asked if the monthly award meant anything to him, Mazzulla delivered an honest and heartfelt response.
“Does it mean something to me? In the past I probably would have said no. But I think it’s a testament to what we’re building and what we’re creating. So it’s a testament to the staff. I wish they would change it to Staff of the Month because I’m not doing it by myself.”
Celtics GM Brad Stevens revamped the coaching staff around Mazzulla during the offseason by adding veteran coaches in Charles Lee and Sam Cassell, which they’ve both made their imprints on this team— Lee with Jrue Holiday and Cassell with Jayson Tatum. It’s also worth mentioning Matt Reynolds who’s an assistant coach and the man behind Mazzulla calling a challenge in a game.
It’s worth noting that Mazzulla could be coaching in the All-Star game for the second consecutive season. There’s a possibility there’ll be much of his team taking part in All-Star festivities in February.
