Opening Up The Files On The Boston Celtics

Boston Celtics fully guarantee contracts for 2023-24 season

The Boston Celtics started the 2023-24 season with four players only on non-guaranteed or partially guaranteed contracts with the deadline to make a decision being Jan. 10. Those players were Luke Kornet, Dalano Banton, Svi Mykhailiuk, and Lamar Stevens, however, the Celtics made all of their contracts guaranteed on Sunday night, three days before the deadline.

Here’s a look at the contracts Boston guaranteed for their players:

  • Dalano Banton: $2,019,706
  • Svi Mykhailiuk: $2,346,614
  • Luke Kornet: $2,413,304
  • Lamar Stevens: $2,092,354

Despite Boston fully guaranteeing these contracts, it doesn’t mean they can’t/wont be traded by the trade deadline. GM Brad Stevens said last week that he’d like to add a “big wing”, which leads me to believe that the Celtics would part ways with Mykhailiuk and Lamar Stevens, which would give them a better opportunity elsewhere.

The same could be said for Banton, but extra depth at guard is needed considering Boston starts two guards on a nightly basis. Not to mention, Banton has unique size for his position, which is an intriguing aspect to him.

It’s worth mentioning that the deadline to convert Neemias Queta’s two-way contract into a standard NBA contract is Mar. 3. However, Celtics GM Brad Stevens said last week that he enjoys the flexibility of having a roster spot open entering the trade deadline, so don’t expect to see Queta to be promoted before March.

The Celtics are in a great position at the top of the league with a 28-7 record and don’t need to do too much at the trade deadline to push this team over the hump to win a championship. But it does seem likely that there will be an addition to the Celtics at the deadline.
