Boston Celtics rookie Jordan Walsh has been assigned to the Maine Celtics this season. He’s averaging 15.2 points per game on 42 percent shooting from the field and 35.4 percent from downtown. Walsh also adds 6.4 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1.2 steals per game.
The second round draft choice has spent most of this season in Maine, however, he’s been in Boston for eight total games but has only seen the court once. Walsh logged his first minutes against the San Antonio Spurs, finishing with four rebounds in three minutes of play.
In Maine, Walsh is playing in a similar role to what he’d be expected to provide in Boston on a regular basis. He’s often defending the best players on opposing teams and doing all of the little things that impact winning that doesn’t always end with taking many shots or scoring many points.
Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla said in a recent interview with Zolak and Bertrand on 98.5 The Sports Hub, the proudest he’s been of Walsh is when he was named Defensive Player of the Game.
“He got Defensive Player of the Game in Maine and that was the proudest I was of him because it’s important when you go from college and come to the NBA that sometime you have to do things that you’re not used to and asked to do things that you’re uncomfortable doing and you have to trust that. You look at the box score and see that he only had five shot attempts but guarded the best player the entire game and had nine rebounds and six assists. For our organization, that’s kind of what success and greatness looks like most of the time.”
The Celtics signed Walsh to a four-year $7.6 million rookie scale contract. He’s on Boston’s 15-man roster and is not on a two-way deal in Maine. He’ll be available for the playoffs with Boston.
GM Brad Stevens is looking to add a “big wing” and said that it could be someone from within the organization. Perhaps it could be Walsh.
