The Boston Celtics started the game with Derrick White scoring a game-high 15-points, making three 3-pointers and three assists in the opening frame.
White went on to score another four-points in the second quarter and five-points in the third quarter in addition to two assists for a total of 24-points and five assists in the game.
It was the end of the fourth quarter where he shined and quite possibly solidified the win for Boston in what head coach Joe Mazzulla called a “genious play” after the game.
In a three-point game during the final minute, White passed the ball to Kristaps Porzingis who had the ball poked away from him, turning into a steal and in the hands of Buddy Hield.
In transition, against the fastest pace team in the NBA, White understood the game situation and knew that the Celtics had a foul to give, which he issued himself, stepping in front of Hield and pausing the game.
This heads up play from White allowed Boston to reset themselves on the defensive end, once again, against the fastest paced team in the NBA.
The Celtics parlayed White’s intentional foul into two blocks to end the game, one by White himself and another by Jayson Tatum.
All Mazzulla could say after that game was that White is a genius.
“He’s a genius player. We’ve missed our foul to give call on the last three times we’ve tried to use it and credit to him for recognizing that and taking advantage of it. Genius play.”
