Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla is just built different. He’s the youngest coach in the NBA, he enjoys fighting through adversity on the court, and he’s probably the only coach in the league that does jujitsu regularly; he’s just built different and there’s nothing wrong with it.
At the end of Game 1 on Sunday, there was a controversial play resulting in Jayson Tatum falling flat on his back and landing on his tail bone after getting undercut by Caleb Martin in the air trying to get a rebound. Tatum popped right back up like nothing happened and walked toward the other end of the court to take his free throws.
Jaylen Brown exchanged words with Martin and the Heat while on the court in the defense of his teammate. It was good to see some edge from someone on this team. That said, I didn’t enjoy what Mazzulla had to say about it during his postgame press conference; I thought it was a missed opportunity.
“I was just waiting to see what he was going to do… I was kind of excited about the whole situation… I enjoyed watching it… he’s fine.”
This would’ve been the perfect opportunity for Mazzulla to truly speak his mind and make a statement. Tatum is a top player in this league and was victim to reckless basketball. The only two people who made their words heard were Brown, who received a technical, and Brian Scalabrine, who made some strong comments during Celtics postgame.
Mazzulla needs to speak up at the right times and make his voice heard as the head coach of this team.
Game 2 is 7:00 PM on Wednesday.
