Opening Up The Files On The Boston Celtics

Payton Pritchard, Celtics too versatile for Heat to handle

In Game 1 on Sunday, the Celtics torched the Miami Heat’s zone defense en route to tying their franchise record for made 3-pointers in a postseason game (22).

Every player on the Celtics made at least two 3-pointers with the exception of Jayson Tatum, who only made one. Sam Hauser caught fire and hit four 3s in the second quarter, Derrick White and Kristaps Porzingis also made four 3s, both going 4-of-8, and Jaylen Brown made three of his own. Jrue Holiday, Al Horford, and Payton Pritchard all made two, as well.

If there’s an adjustment to be made from the Heat, it’s going to be to limit the amount of 3-pointers the Celtics attempt. Miami chose to leave Hauser open, and he repaid them with making three straight 3-pointers—four total— in the second quarter.

Let’s break it down further.

Boston scored 66-points just from behind the arc while Miami scored 36-points from deep, which is a 30-point difference in a game Miami lost by 20. Miami isn’t going to be able to stop Boston from launching 3s, as they led the NBA this season with 16.5 made per game on 42 attempts.

Pritchard played 24-minutes off the bench and finished with a plus-minus of +19, the second-highest plus-minus of the game behind White, who was a +24. Pritchard finished with eight points, four rebounds, and five assists in Game 1.

Pritchard talked to the media during practice on Tuesday, saying they’ll be ready for whatever adjustments Miami makes for Game 2, including their physicality.

“We try to pride ourselves on taking what the defense gives us. So, if they end up taking away more three-balls, we have the ability to go inside. Guys are capable of hitting those midranges. If that’s what they want to give us, we’ve got to take them, and be confident taking them. But we have a lot of different options , it’s what makes us hard to guard.”

The Celtics are simply too versatile and have too many options for the Heat to handle, not to mention being unable to match the talent that Boston has. If and when the adjustments come, the Celtics will have the answers to respond to it.
