Opening Up The Files On The Boston Celtics

Boston Celtics make JD Davison unrestricted free agent

After re-signing many players after they won the NBA Finals, the Boston Celtics didn’t issue a qualifying offer to JD Davison, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Davison was drafted by the Celtics 53rd overall in the 2022 NBA Draft. He’s spent the last two seasons on two-way contracts while improving his overall game in Maine.

The versatile guard averaged 20.8 points, 8.6 assists, 5.4 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game in the G League last year and also made the All-NBA G League Third Team.

In the two years he’s been on a two-way contact, Davison hasn’t spent too much time in Boston- only logging 20 total games in those two years.

Brad Stevens recently said that he’d like to bring Davison back in “some capacity” but he wasn’t tendered an offer at this time. But it’s worth mentioning Davison is eligible for one more year in the G League.

“JD will be a free agent, but we’d very much like to try to figure out a way to get him back in some capacity and he’s 21 [years-old].”

Davison still has elements to his game that’ll need to be sharpened and perhaps another year in the G League with the best team in the league is what’s best for him.

As great as he is on offense, Davison struggles with shooting, specifically from behind the arc and free throws. He averaged 26.6 percent on 3-pointers and 68.2 percent on free throws.

Davison does everything that Boston expects a point guard to do on both ends of the court but he needs to improve his shooting if he wants to play for the Celtics in Boston or even for another team in the NBA.
