Opening Up The Files On The Boston Celtics

Celtics Files: Brown, Stevens, Grousbeck, Roster, Other Notes & Takeaways

The Boston Celtics won the Finals two weeks ago and re-signed most of their free agents to truly run-it-back with their championship team.

It’s great for the team to retain just about all of their free agents, but it’s worth mentioning it’s their only real option in the financial situation they’re in as a second apron team.

As a second apron team, the Celtics can only re-sign their own free agents, sign draft picks, and sign minimum contracts. Boston can make trades, but it can only be for a player that has a contract less or equal to the incoming salary- so it limits their options.

From Boston’s championship team, everyone is returning except Oshae Brissett, who could still re-sign, and Svi Mykhailiuk who has ties to playing overseas.

Brad Stevens has done a great job navigating and preparing for this offseason with dealing with the limitations. He put on a masterclass as a GM, earning Executive of the Year and his team won a championship.

This team was able to happen largely due to Wyc Grousbeck and the rest of the ownership group allowing Stevens to assemble one of the richest teams in the league by adding the right players at the right time.

That said, Grousbeck and the ownership group decided to sell the team. The sale is happening almost immediately and Grousbeck will see it through until the final closing of the sale that can take up to 2028.

This was shocking news for everyone, even for Jayson Tatum, but it’s fair to assume that this team was going to become too rich for current ownership to afford. Perhaps now is the best time to sell.

Here are some other notes surrounding the Celtics:

There’s still more to happen for the Celtics this summer considering the news of wanting to sell, but as for the team, the next step for them is Summer League and evaluating the players they have.
