Opening Up The Files On The Boston Celtics

Celtics Files: Watson, Hauser, Walsh, Summer League, Other Notes & Takeaways

The Boston Celtics have signed many of their players this offseason, including rookie Baylor Scheierman who was drafted in the first round of the 2024 NBA Draft.

The champs are bringing back 13 of 15 players from last year’s title team. They signed Scheierman to a four-year deal, which led GM Brad Stevens to say “we have to be mindful of the last roster spot with what our needs might be.”

It’s worth noting that second round pick Anton Watson is one of ten drafted players yet to sign a contract with their team. Watson had a great summer, averaging 51/35/86 splits and was the most consistent player on Boston’s roster this summer.

At the conclusion of Summer League, Watson told the media that he was expecting to work on a deal this upcoming week, possibly for a two-way contract:

“I think we’re going to figure that out sometime this week. Those conversations are definitely coming.”

While Watson looked great in his first Summer League with Boston, Jordan Walsh struggled in his second. He said that he entered Summer League with the wrong mindset but he turned it around near the end.

Walsh has the opportunity to earn rotation minutes as wing depth behind Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown in training camp despite not having a great showing this summer. He’s part of Boston’s future and will have the chance to show what he can bring to the table, however, Scheierman might be slightly ahead of Walsh developmentally.

The Celtics have a lot invested in Walsh, who spent a large majority of his rookie season in Maine. He signed a four-year, $7.6 million deal in 2023 and looks to be heading back to Maine to begin this next season.

Stevens continues his summer of signings by re-signing sharpshooter Sam Hauser to a four-year, $45 million contract extension. Hauser shot 42.4 percent on 3-pointers last season, ranking fourth in the NBA (400 min.).

Here are other notes and takeaways from the Celtics:

  • Ron Harper Jr. to have strong showing in training camp on Exhibit-10 deal. Maybe he’ll end up in Maine to continue with his development, but nevertheless, Boston is going to get another look at him in training camp.
  • Anton Watson is the likely candidate for the final two-way contract; JD Davison and Drew Peterson already signed to two-way contracts.
  • SLAM Magazine features the Celtics with Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown on the cover.
  • Joel Embiid takes shot at Jayson Tatum and Celtics through their shared trainer, Drew Hanlen.
  • Wyc Grousbeck brought the Larry O’Brien Trophy to Bob Cousy’s house and the Celtics legend will receive a 2024 championship ring.
