In what was a quick last minute decision, the Boston Celtics traded Robert Williams, Malcolm Brogdon, and two first round picks to the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for Jrue Holiday just prior to the start of training camp last summer.
The Celtics decided to move on from Williams after five seasons, one of which he was named to NBA All-Defensive Second Team in 2021-22 along with many injury-filled years that left him off the court more often than not.
A recent report from Bleacher Report’s Grant Hughes suggests that the Celtics could be interested in re-acquiring Williams.
“Williams was his best self with the 2021-22 Celtics, earning an All-Defensive second-team nod and finishing among the top 10 in Most Improved Player voting. He’s been hurt on and off ever since, makes a tricky $13.9 million for the second-aproned Celtics and should be in demand as a trade chip for several other teams. But Boston’s center rotation feels fragile, and Williams was once viewed as a key piece of the team.”
There’s really no need for the Celtics to go out and re-acquire Williams, their only draft pick in 2018, considering their financial situation as a second apron team and Williams is inked for 13.9 million.
It’s worth mentioning that it’s not the wildest idea as Brad Stevens has a history of bringing back his former players. Daniel Theis in 2022 and Al Horford in 2021.
Although Boston’s center position is a little shaky with Kristaps Porzingis missing the start of the season and both Luke Kornet (wrist) and Xavier Tillman (knee) having offseason procedures, it still seems unlikely for Williams to return to Boston.
The thought is intriguing to think about with Porzingis’ rare injury situation and Horford’s age. If/when Williams is healthy, he’s a total force and game changer when he’s on the court.
