Opening Up The Files On The Boston Celtics

Jayson Tatum, Joe Mazzulla unhappy with no-call on Giannis, Celtics vs Bucks

On Sunday in Milwaukee, the Celtics defeated the Bucks 113-107. It was the seventh game of the season that Jayson Tatum scored at least 30-points and he continues to lead Boston this season currently with a 9-2 record, good for second in the Eastern Conference and tied for second in the league.

Tatum finished the game scoring 31-points on 7-of-21 shooting from the field and 4-of-12 on 3-pointers. He also added 12-rebounds and six assists in a team-high 40-minutes.

In the third quarter of the game, Tatum landed on Giannis Antetokunmpo’s foot and turned it awkwardly after taking a shot from behind the arc. Tatum hit the floor and grabbed his ankle before walking off with the trainers.

After the game, Tatum explained to reporters the no-call on Giannis is frustrating because he could’ve been seriously injured and it would have been for nothing.

“I get my fair share of techs throughout the season- rightfully so, unrightfully so. Certain calls I feel like you can’t miss. Your job is to protect the guys on the court- protect the shooter. That’s something I could have been out for six weeks. For it to be a no-call, let alone to be able to review it or look at it. If I lose my shit, cuss somebody out, then I get a tech. It’s like a double whammy. That shit is frustrating.”

Head coach Joe Mazzulla also shared his frustration with the no-call on Tatum during his postgame press conference. Mazzulla was impressed with how Tatum handled himself to finish the game strong.

“That’s ridiculous. Can’t miss that. Can’t miss that. He didn’t let it impact the rest of the game on either end of the floor. But the refs did a great job. They knew that they missed it. … But credit to him [Tatum] for handling it the right way.”

Had the no-call been able to be reviewed, it’s likely that a flagrant-1 penalty would’ve been issued to Giannis and Boston would have shot two free throws.

It was a missed call nonetheless and it seems like the officials knew that they missed it, according to Mazzulla in his postgame press conference.

The Celtics play again next on Tuesday where they’ll host the Atlanta Hawks in the first NBA Cup Tournament game of the season.
