The Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks at the TD Garden on a Friday night doesn’t get much better than that for NBA hoops.
Boston defeated Milwaukee 111-105 behind a great game from Jayson Tatum (34 points) and Jaylen Brown (25 points) as they led the Celtics to the finish line.
The team played great defense throughout the game that had 14 lead changes and made head coach Joe Mazzulla proud of his team’s effort in the first night of a back-to-back.
Here are four takeaways from the game:
Jayson Tatum Fourth Quarter Takeover
Jayson Tatum played a great game from start to finish. He scored 34-points on 12-of-20 shooting from the field and went 4-of-10 from behind the arc. He also had 10 rebounds and four assists.
The impressive part of Tatum’s game came in the fourth quarter when Boston needed to keep their foot on the gas pedal while Tatum’s foot was pedal to the metal.
Tatum scored 14-points on 5-of-5 shooting from the field and 2-of-2 from behind the arc in the fourth quarter. He also grabbed four rebounds on the defensive end and went to the free throw line three times.
He put on a show for his son, Deuce, who was celebrating his seventh birthday watching his dad play at the TD Garden.
Jaylen Brown Beef With Giannis Antetokunmpo Continues
Jaylen Brown and Giannis Antetokunmpo have been jawing at each other all season as Boston completed the series sweep against Milwaukee on Friday night.
In the last matchup in Milwaukee on Nov. 10, Antetokunmpo pulled a couple fast ones on Brown during the game, to which Brown called Giannis a child after the game for his antics.
On Friday night, there was a play at the start of the third quarter where Brown scored on Giannis and gave him the “too small” gesture, which prompted Giannis to give Brown an elbow. Brown didn’t like that and let Giannis know while pointing his finger in his face, drawing a technical foul from the officials.
The competition between Brown and Giannis has been relevant for the last five years when Brown started making poster dunks on Giannis a regular thing.
3-Point Shooting Was Lazy
The Celtics lead the NBA in 3-point shooting attempts by a wide margin. It’s almost become the team’s offensive philosophy to outscore the other team by outshooting them for more points; a simple math game.
The thing that’s happening is that even when Boston isn’t shooting great from deep, they’re not going to deviate from the plan and still put up shots.
For the first time this season, Boston finished a quarter without making any 3-pointers. They went 0-for-12 in the second quarter, regrouped at halftime and made 5-of-13 in the third, and 5-of-12 in the fourth.
Derrick White (0-of-8) and Payton Pritchard (0-of-2) didn’t make any 3-pointers in the game.
Tatum (4-of-10) Jrue Holiday (4-of-8), and Sam Hauser (4-of-9) all made four 3-pointers in the game. Brown made three.
Second Chance Points
The Celtics finished the game with zero second chance points while the Bucks had 11. How does that happen? Lack of overall rebounding and effort.
While Boston finished with 10 less rebounds than Milwaukee did, the Bucks had five more offensive rebounds than the Celtics.
The Celtics had seven different players make one offensive rebound.
What’s Next?
The Celtics will be on the second night of a back-to-back on Saturday when they host the Memphis Grizzlies. It will be the first time that Marcus Smart plays against his former team.
Tipoff is at 8:00 PM.
