Opening Up The Files On The Boston Celtics

Should the Boston Celtics call up rookie Baylor Scheierman?

The Boston Celtics need a depth wing they can trust to come off the bench for Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum and produce for the second unit.

As of late, head coach Joe Mazzulla has used a lot of double-big lineups because there isn’t a depth wing that he trusts right now behind Sam Hauser, who’s struggled more often than not this season.

After Hauser, there’s really only Jordan Walsh, who’s in his second season and not really part of the rotation. And depending on how you look at them, there’s also Xavier Tillman and Jaden Springer.

Needless to say, Boston could use an additional wing and they have an available roster spot to do so. It’s worth noting that GM Brad Stevens has already tried to move Springer prior to the start of the season. Perhaps it’s something he’s still working on doing by the trade deadline.

Until then, however, there’s a player on the roster right now that could potentially help in the short-term. He’s currently on assignment in Maine, rookie first round draft pick Baylor Scheierman.

Scheierman (6-foot-6, 205 lbs.) has spent some time with Boston but a majority of this season has been in Maine, where he’s been one of the top players in the G League. He’s averaging 19.9 points on 42.3 percent shooting from the field and 37.0 percent from behind the arc with 5.7 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 1.7 steals per game in nine regular season games in the G League.

The rookie has perfected his shot, worked on his defense, and obtained confidence during his time with Maine. Scheierman is learning how Boston wants him to play and he’s really starting to show it in his recent games.

Scheierman can really light it up from behind the arc. In Maine’s last game, he finished with eight made 3-pointers as he helped lead the Celtics to a win on the road. He has a great shooting form as a lefty, he knows how to use his body, and he can take-and-make it from anywhere on the court.

In addition to his shooting, he’s a great passer and overall playmaker. It’s an underrated part of his game, but he’s able to do it. Again, in his last game, he had nine assists as he led Maine to a win on the road.

Scheierman might only be a rookie, but Boston has high expectations for him as a first round pick, the first for Stevens as a GM. At 24-years-old, he’s older and more polished than some of the players ahead of him on the roster, including both Walsh and Springer.

With the second half of the season around the corner, it might be a good time to see what Scheierman can offer off the bench in Boston.
