Opening Up The Files On The Boston Celtics

Joe Mazzulla wants to validate the progress from Celtics rookie, called up from Maine

Boston Celtics rookie first round draft pick Baylor Scheierman was called up from Maine to be with the team in Boston as he’s thrived in the G League so far this season. It also comes at a time when Boston could use some depth to the wing position during a stretch of recent struggles.

Scheierman is averaging 20.6 points per game on 42.1 percent shooting from the field and 40 percent shooting from behind the arc. He also grabs 6.2 rebounds, makes 5.2 assists, and 1.6 steals per game in 11 games in the G League.

The rookie has been on assignment in Maine more often than not this season, where he continues to improve as both a shooter and a playmaker. After every game, he goes through film on a FaceTime call with Celtics Director of Player Development Craig Luschenat, to talk about what he did well and other things he can improve on.

“A lot of time, I’m just here, being where my feet are. I don’t really hear a lot from what’s going on in Boston. Me and Craig watch a lot of film, I probably talk to him the most. But outside of that, it’s kind of just focusing on here and focusing on getting better and being where my feet are.”

In a recent pregame press conference, head coach Joe Mazzulla talked about Scheierman being called up, saying it’s good to validate the work that he’s doing up there.

“Just continuing to trust his development plan as far as what it means to compete defensively and continue to grow on the offensive end. I think you try to find small moments to have those guys spend time with us to validate the work and also to continue to see what we do here. He’s had a great attitude and just has to continue to trust his development plan.”

To Mazzulla’s credit, Scheierman has played six games with Boston this season, making the trip from Maine about once a month so far this season.

Scheierman has perfected his shot, worked on his defense, and obtained confidence during his time with Maine. Scheierman is learning how Boston wants him to play and he’s really starting to show it in his recent games

The rookie is with Boston as they begin the second four-game road trip of the month out west against Golden State, both Los Angeles teams, and Dallas.

Scheierman saw four-minutes of action to end the game against the Warriors as Boston blew them out, 125-88. He finished with five-points on 2-of-3 shooting (1-of-2 three-pointers), three rebounds, and one assist.

One of the things Mazzulla wanted to see was how Scheierman competes on defense. He was fighting for rebounds on every possession and got all of his rebounds on the defensive end.

Mazzulla also wanted to see what Scheierman can bring to the offense. His shooting was on full display while being defended well on each shot.

Scheierman also showed off his playmaking skills with a paint-pass to Neemias Queta off of a high pick-and-roll starting from the right wing. This is a staple for the Maine offense and the rookie performed it well for Boston.

Boston has a set of back-to-back games next up in Los Angeles against both teams. Hopefully we’ll see Scheierman get some more run with Boston on this current road trip.
