The Boston Celtics picked up their second loss in a row on Friday night to the Cavaliers and it doesn’t get any easier in their next game today against the Wizards.
The biggest problem the Celtics face this afternoon is dealing with Kristaps Porzingis. Although the C’s can match the size of Porzingis with Luke Kornet, I don’t think it would matter as Kornet isn’t near the level of a player that Porzingis is.
Washington’s trio of Bradley Beal, Kyle Kuzma, and Porzingis brings some real firepower, averaging 112 points per game and shooting 37.2 percent from behind the arc.
The Celtics have surprisingly struggled on defense and defending the perimeter this season. We saw Donovan Mitchell and Caris LeVert drop 41 points each on Friday night and I don’t think it’s too crazy to suggest that Beal and Kuzma can do something similar.
Joe Mazzulla needs to focus more on the defensive end and stick to what works well with this group. It took a long time to find a working system within this group, they shouldn’t go in a different direction from it.
Boston will look different today with Grant Williams back in the lineup and although he defends well, he is still undersized in the center position.
I truly believe focusing on and hunkering down on the defensive end will start to impact the game and earn victories. It’s only a matter of Mazzulla giving his guys the green light to do so.
