Opening Up The Files On The Boston Celtics

Boston Celtics: What led Bol Bol to and from Boston last season

With the Boston Celtics hosting the Orlando Magic this weekend, let’s reminisce on the very short stint that Bol Bol had in Boston last season.

Let’s “open up the files” on Bol Bol’s time in Boston.

Bol is a player that some Celtics fans wish was still on the team, especially during the beginning of the season while Rob Williams was recovering from his offseason surgery.

The thing with Bol is that he’s been hurt for most of his NBA career, only playing in 53 games over his first three seasons, which was the unappealing part to the Celtics despite Bol’s incredible potential.

On Jan. 19, 2022, the Celtics acquired Bol from the Nuggets, along with PJ Dozier in a three-team deal that sent Juancho Hernangomez to the Spurs and Bryn Forbes to the Nuggets.

At this time, the Celtics were still rostering Dennis Schroder, Josh Richardson, Enes Freedom, Aaron Nesmith, Romeo Langford, and Tremont Waters to name a handful of players still with Boston at the time.

On Feb. 10, 2022, the NBA’s trade deadline, the Celtics sent Bol, Dozier, and a future-second round draft pick along with cash to the Magic in exchange for their second round draft pick.

Bol was essentially the tool that Brad Stevens used to create the team we see this season and went to the NBA Finals last season.

By trading Bol at the deadline, it gave Boston both the roster and financial flexibility to then acquire Derrick White from the Spurs, a player who went on to become an integral piece in a championship run for the Celtics.

Bol is averaging 12.4 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game this season. At 7’2”, Bol has the handles of a point guard and can shoot the 3-ball as well as be dominant in the paint. When healthy, Bol can be the whole package of a complete player, it’s truly fascinating to see.
