Both Marcus Smart and Rob Williams did not return to for the second half of play in Toronto on Saturday evening, leaving the Boston Celtics to a new game plan for the rest of the game.
Williams, who’s being reintegrated back onto the court after going through multiple surgeries in the offseason to repair and “clean up” his torn meniscus, fell to the floor after friendly fire with Jaylen Brown, who was pushed into Rob’s knee.
After the game, Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla said that Rob hyperextended his knee, but “it’s nothing serious” as the team was being extra precautionary with the situation.
Smart hit the floor hard after what looked like a rolled ankle on a no-contact, as he was trying to turn the corner on a handoff from Al Horford.
This is the same ankle Smart injured in the Eastern Conference Finals that lingered on deep into the offseason. Mazzulla went on to say during postgame that Smart will be listed as day-to-day for the time being.
This was the start of a three-game road trip for the Celtics, who next go to Florida to play the Magic and Heat on a back-to-back on Monday and Tuesday.
Considering it’s a back-to-back, we have to expect Horford is going to sit out one of these games (usually the second night). However, if Williams is going to miss additional time, perhaps Horford won’t be feeling his lower back stiffness and plays in both of these games.
