Opening Up The Files On The Boston Celtics

Derrick White is on pace to hit 3-point contract inventive

Boston Celtics do-it-all guard Derrick White is playing on another level this season. He’s the only player in the NBA to have totaled 50+ steals, 50+ blocks, and make 100+ 3-pointers by the All-Star break.

He’s played like an All-Star, despite not being named to the team, and the argument for him to be is an easy one. As Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla said, winning isn’t being valued:

“Clearly winning’s not important huh? Winning’s not valuable. That’s my reaction. How could you not put both of those guys in? Winning’s not the most important in the league.”

White may not have been named an All-Star but he’s definitely one of the top players in the league that contributes to winning for the best team in the NBA.

He’s averaging 15.6 points with 46/39/89 shooting splits while adding 3.9 rebounds, 4.7 assists, 1.0 steals, and 1.2 blocks, all of which are career highs for White.

According to Spotrac, White has an unlikely to be earned incentive, which I believe he’s going to hit this season.

White needs to make at least 185 3-pointers to make an additional $500,000. So lets do the math.

White has made 136 3-pointers with the season currently on it’s All-Star break. When they return from break, they will have 27-games left on their schedule for the regular season and he only needs to make 49 more 3’s.

White is making 2.7 3-pointers per game. Even if we round his average down to 2.0 made 3-pointers per game, White will still make another 54 3-pointers within the final 27-games, bringing his season total to 190 and hitting his incentive.

This isn’t the first time (or the last time) White has hit incentives in his contract. Last season, he earned $750,000 in incentives for playing more than 70 games and making an All-Defense team, which Spotrac listed as “unlikely to be earned” along with making 185 3-pointers, the same as this season.

Furthermore, White is likely to hit all of his incentives this season:

White has been phenomenal this season and the Celtics should look to re-sign him sooner than later. He’s having a career year and is likely to make his second consecutive All-Defense team.
