Opening Up The Files On The Boston Celtics

Celtics Files: Tatum, Brown, Walsh, Second Apron, Other Notes & Takeaways

The Boston Celtics are still running business as usual after winning an NBA championship and then announcing the team is up for sale, as the Grousbeck family wants to sell their majority shares of the franchise.

While getting business done, GM Brad Stevens re-signed Jayson Tatum to the largest contract in NBA history with a five-year, $314 million supermax extension. Tatum understands what this means and he’s grateful for it, as he told Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe.

“For me just to feel wanted, and they want me to be here and want me for the long haul. I’ll spend my whole career here and have got nothing but love for the fans, the city, and the organization. You know, we just won a championship and I want to try to win as many as I can.”

Tatum was the second player since 1973-74 to lead all players in points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks in a playoff series.

Here are other notes and takeaways from the Celtics this past week:

  • Jaylen Brown won the ESPY for the best championship performance. He averaged 20.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 5.0 assists in the Finals.
  • Brown expressed frustration with Team USA by not being invited to join the team, even as a replacement, which went to his teammate Derrick White.
  • Jordan Walsh has improved over the last season in Maine under Boston’s system and he’s looking forward to getting on the court to show it: “I would say another thing is just being a better player than I was last year- showing improvement. Showing I’ve had a year in the NBA now- now I’m a way better player than I was last year.”
  • JD Davison re-signed his third two-way deal with the Celtics.
  • Summer League begins tonight for Boston against Miami at 6:30 PM.
  • It’s worth noting that Jaden Springer is on a larger contract ($4,018,363) for a player that isn’t a real contributor while Boston is $7,643,991 over the second apron.
  • Celtics hire God Shammgod Jr. and Da’Sean Butler to coaching staff- they’re both connected to Joe Mazzulla.
