The Boston Celtics need to acquire an additional offensive weapon who can compliment Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum next season. With a ton of assets at their disposal, the Celtics need to start utilizing these built up TPE’s to revamp their roster this summer.
President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens hasn’t hesitated at the chance of making his team better since being promoted to the big chair. In a matter of days, he brought in AlHorford and set the team up for acquiring Derrick White at the trading deadline.
This offseason, however, Stevens needs to make a big splash and hit another home run in making his team better. One way of doing that is by using up the $17.1M TPE from Evan Fournier, which is set to expire this summer.
There’s a ton of players who fit into the Fournier TPE. However there’s one that really stands out to me: Kelly Oubre Jr.
Oubre stands 6’7” tall and is a 26 year-old veteran who landed in Charlotte after bouncing around three other teams to start his career. He averaged 15 points, four rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game in 76 games last season and shot 44 percent from the field and 34.5 percent from behind the arc.
There’s a lot of appeal with Oubre, who’s waited it out and gotten better each year. He’ll be an unrestricted free agent in 2023 and will have a high market for himself with the way he produces.
In regards to the overall fit, Oubre adds size to the wing position and can hang with the best of ‘em like Brown and Tatum on both ends of the court. Keep in mind, acquiring Oubre would mean parting ways with a few players that I think the Hornets front office would find intriguing enough to pull the trigger on a tree.
Oubre’s expiring and current contract is for $12.9 M and would certainly slide into the $17.1 M TPE the Celtics need to use. Aaron Nesmith, Daniel Theis, and probably another future asset I think would seal the deal.
The thing with making a large offer for Oubre is that he’s a player that’s worth re-signing to add to the current core group in Boston. A player like Oubre, on a team like the Celtics, would thrive. I’ll even say this: if Oubre was on the Celtics last season they would’ve won the Finals.
Oubre might be the missing piece to an already championship built Boston Celtics team and the future.
