The Boston Celtics made a franchise altering trade in 2007 by acquiring a dominant and forceful power forward in Kevin Garnett. The addition of Garnett in Boston created a new era of a Big-Three in the NBA by teaming him up with Paul Pierce and Ray Allen en route to raising Banner 17 to the rafters of the TD Garden.
However, seven long and draining years prior to the legendary trade, Garnett walked into the Boston Fleet Center (now TD Garden) as the leader of the Minnesota Timberwolves and casually dropped 40 points against a Celtics team led by his best friend in Paul Pierce.
In March of 2000, Garnett scored 40 points on 69.6 percent shooting from the field with 8 rebounds and 3 assists, defeating the Celtics 109-106 (03/22/00).
Who would’ve thought KG would one day raise a championship banner into the TD Garden rafters and 15 years later raise his retired No. 5 into the same rafters?
Probably only Paul Pierce.
Although 22 years was a long time ago, this is just another thing to add to Garnett’s legend. He was at the highest point of the NBA in ‘04 when he earned the MVP Award just three years before he’d be traded to Boston.
KG will forever be a legend in the city of Boston.
