Opening Up The Files On The Boston Celtics

Celtics Files: Jayson Tatum is poised to lead the Celtics on defense with Rob Williams out

The Boston Celtics might lack in size but that’s not an acceptable excuse for Jayson Tatum who’s been playing at an MVP level to start the season and has been all over the court trying to make an impact for his team.

Tatum is averaging 30.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 1.4 blocks per game this season with shooting splits of .503/ .368/ .899. But what’s been most impressive from him is his relentless drive to do whatever it takes to win and we’re seeing it now more than ever before.

In years past, Tatum would let a bad shooting night impact his overall performance for the entirety of a game. He would often display poor posture and let uncontrollable variables bother him most. However, that’s not the case this season and it’s noticeable though the first eight games.

As a result, Tatum is the second player in Celtics history to average at least 30 points through the first eight games of a season, joining Larry Bird in 1984-85. Tatum also passed Bird by scoring the most points (247) through the first eight games of a Celtics season.

Tatum is arguably the best player on the court at all times when he’s out there. We’re seeing him evolve into the most complete two-way player in the NBA and it’s happening right before our eyes. Tatum has stepped up in every way possible on both ends during the time Rob Williams is out with injury.

I believe Tatum is going to lead the Celtics this year in rebounds and blocks without Rob available at the start of the season and his defensive presence will be more impactful than ever before.
