For years now, the narrative has been set that the Boston Celtics need a “third scorer” to complement their All-Star caliber dynamic duo of Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum.
Last season it was Marcus Smart. The two seasons prior it was Kemba Walker. And the season before that it was Kyrie Irving and Marcus Morris.
It’s fair to say they’ve had third scorers around the Jay’s, it just didn’t last long enough for Brown and Tatum to evolve into the high caliber players they’ve become this season.
This season it’s Malcolm Brogdon, and it’s exactly who it should be. At 13.5 points per game, Brogdon has totaled 458 points as the primary sixth man in his first year in Boston, as he hovers around another possible 50-40-90 season.
Brogdon’s also been to the free throw line 97 times this season, the third most on the team, but he has the highest free throw percentage on the team at 87.6 percent.
It’s also worth mentioning Brogdon’s presence off the bench has completely unlocked a new level for this team and it’s made all the difference in this season.
He’s been a key element for the Celtics, an important part of Boston returning to the NBA Finals.
