Austin Ainge, the director of player of player personnel for the Boston Celtics, joined Chris Forsberg of NBC Sports Boston to talk about Boston’s international and two-way players. Of which, I enjoyed what he had to say about JD Davison.
“JD just didn’t get a ton of reps last year as a pure point guard and a very young guy. So we’re just trying to give him as many reps as we can running pick-and-rolls up in Maine. Alex Barlow has done a great job of that with him up there. Him and Fi have been a deadly pick-and-roll combination up there in the GLeague and he continues to get better offensively and defensively. The jump shot is still coming along and when that clicks for him, he has a real chance.”
Davison has been traveling with the Celtics lately with Payton Pritchard being injured for the past few games now, giving Boston more depth to the position.
JDD is averaging 12.4 points, 8.6 assists, and 4.1 rebounds per game with shooting splits of 52/35/69 in his first season in Maine.
As Ainge said, JD needs to improve his jump shot and become a better shooter. That said, he has all the other intangibles needed for the Celtics’ point guard position.
