The Boston Celtics shutdown the Miami Heat in five-games and will have six-days off before the start of the second round, as Boston is still waiting to find out who their opponent will be, either the Cleveland Cavaliers or the Orlando Magic.
On Sunday, the Cavaliers and Magic will play in Game 7 with the winner going to Boston on Tuesday for Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals. Let’s take a look at what each team offers Boston as a potential matchup.
Right off the bat, it’s worth mentioning that it’s likely Kristaps Porzingis won’t be available for this second round series, as he’s dealing with a right calf strain with reporting suggesting that he’ll be out for a couple of weeks.
That said, both the Cavs and Magic have big men that’ll challenge Boston’s frontcourt depth without Porzingis. Each team brings their own challenges against the Celtics.
With Orlando, there’s a legitimate superstar on the rise in Paolo Banchero, who’s leading the Magic through the playoffs. There’s also a solid point guard in Jalen Suggs and the dynamic duo Wagner brothers who have the ability to change a game when they’re playing well.
Orlando’s defense finished the regular season fourth in points allowed per game (108.4) and second in defensive rating (111.3).
With Cleveland, there’s a certified superstar in Donovan Mitchell, who has the power to take over any game by the flip of a switch. There’s a great point guard in Darius Garland and two mobile big men with Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen.
Cleveland’s defense finished the regular season seventh in points allowed per game (110.2), fifth in opponent field goal percentage (46.3%), and fourth in points in the paint allowed (46.4).
It’s worth noting that Allen has missed the last two games with a rib injury and his status for Game 7 is still uncertain, making it his third straight game missed in this series.
Although the Celtics have superstars and great role players that helped make them the best team in the league this season, they have more playoff experience than both the Magic and the Cavs, which is an important factor at times in the playoffs.
It’s fair to say that Boston would have more problems with Cleveland and Orlando would be the easier matchup. However, it’s worth noting that the Magic have randomly had the Celtics number over the years and could definitely find themselves sneaking out a win or two against them in the playoffs.
We’ll know whether it’s the Magic or the Cavs later this afternoon with the winner heading to Boston for Game 1 on Tuesday.
