The Boston Celtics need to look at another way to upgrade the roster, and it could include trading for Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Celtics are linked to him as one of the few teams that have an actual possibility of landing the two-time league MVP.
It’s no secret that Boston needs to have another roster shakeup after a first-round playoff loss to the Philadelphia 76ers. The Ringer’s Bill Simmons, on his podcast with NBA Insider Zach Lowe, shared that the Celtics’ interest in Antetokounmpo is real and they even submitted an offer over the last week.
“I think they dove in. From what I heard, they made an offer in the past week- a couple days before I mentioned it on Thursday. I don’t know what their offer was or who was in it, but that was in the ring, which I was really surprised by because I thought they were sitting out.”
It’s been speculated that the Miami Heat will land Antetokounmpo and it’s mostly because he’s said that he would like to play in Miami. The thing is, he is intrigued by playing the talents of Bam Adebayo and to be coached by one of the best in the NBA with Eric Spoelstra.
That said, trading for Giannis would certainly have to include Adebayo, some of the depth, and many draft picks, which would deplete the roster and not give Giannis the supporting cast that he’s looking for to compete for another championship in his 14th season.
“Giannis is pushing for Miami or Boston. Those are the two locations he really wants to end up in. Boston because he would have the best chance to win a title. Boston is not ruling out the idea, is my intel. In general, I’m prepared for anything with Boston now.”
The Celtics have more of what Giannis is looking for with a new team and Boston has more to offer than Miami. This potential trade would most likely have to include Celtics All-Star Jaylen Brown.
It’s worth mentioning that Giannis only has one-year remaining on his contract and he could opt out it next summer, despite being eligible for a four-year, $275 million extension.
Giannis averaged 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game with a 62.4 field goal percentage. He will turn 32-years-old during the season.
