The Boston Celtics are looking to add another center to their rotation this offseason, and with free agency set to begin on Tuesday evening, it’s expected to see the Celtics be active and aggressive to get the top option on their list.

According to The Stein Line, it’s veteran center Kevon Looney that is believed to be one of Boston’s targets in free agency. Stein also names Robert Williams as a possible target for Boston.

“It’s believed that Looney is also on Boston’s list of center targets, which is likewise known to feature former Celtics big man Robert Williams III.”

After being with Golden State for 10-years and won three championships, Looney spent last season with the New Orleans Pelicans. He only played in 21-games due to a lingering knee injury, and he only averaged 2.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.

Looney still has an $8 million team option for next year, but NBA Insider Chris Haynes reported that the Pelicans are expected to decline it, which will make Looney an unrestricted free agent.

Although it was a down year last season, Looney was an important part for the Warriors during their most recent championship run. From 2021-2023, Looney started in 150 of 164 games, averaging 6.5 points on a 60.2 field goal percentage and he had 8.3 rebounds per game.

The Celtics’ center position is thin and needs to be retooled ahead of next season. There are currently only two centers under contract with Neemias Queta and Luka Garza, who are both signed for $2.6 million and $2.8 million, respectively. They also drafted a center in Amari Williams last year.

Boston brought on veteran big man Nikola Vucevic at the trade deadline, but that unfortunately failed and didn’t work out for them in the end.

A potential reunion with Williams is intriguing after he spent the first five years of his career with Boston and was No. 7 for Defensive Player of the Year and he made All-Defensive Second Team in 2021-22. He is familiar with the scheme and would be a great piece to have back in Boston.

One last note on both Looney and Williams possibly being on the Celtics next season: it does not help the heavy 3-point shooting scheme.

Stein also notes that the New York Knicks are going to be targeting Looney as well.
