The Celtics made their first addition in free agency on veteran point guard Mike Conley Jr, agreeing on a one-year deal. Conley is 38-years-old and will be in his 20th NBA season.
Even at this point in his career, Conley still performs at a high level. He shoots 43.6% from the field and 38.7% on 3-pointers. Last year, he came off the bench for the first time since early in his career, finishing with 4.5 points and 2.9 assists per game on 34/34/90 shooting splits.
In the playoffs last season, Conley played in 12 games (five starts), averaging 4.4 points, 1.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists in 14.0 minutes per game. He finished with eight steals and only five turnovers and he shot 50% from the field and on 3-pointers.
Conley will likely have a backup role for the Celtics, but he’s a veteran that they can rely on. He’ll be the oldest player on the team, which is a missing element for this group without Al Horford or Jrue Holiday and it proved to be an important one for this team.
It’s also worth noting that Conley is the third former Timberwolves player that the Celtics have signed since last year with Luka Garza and Josh Minott.
One last note on Conley. He is a two-time Teammate of the Year recipient (2020, 2024) and will be great for the locker room. Holiday, who was a three-time recipient of the award when he came to Boston, was important for the locker room.
