If the Boston Celtics find themselves in a position where they need to trade All-Star forward Jaylen Brown, there might only be one team willing and interested to trade for him at this point and it’s with the Utah Jazz run by Danny Ainge.
To start, Ainge originally maneuvered the blockbuster deal in 2013 that sent Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett to the Brooklyn Nets for three future first round picks and a future pick-swap.
The Ainge-led Celtics used Brooklyn’s 2016 first round pick to draft Brown third overall and the following year he drafted Jayson Tatum third overall with their future pick-swap with Brooklyn in 2017.
Now, ten-years later, Ainge has the same role with Utah as he did with Boston (plus ownership) and he could be looking for another big move that could reunite him with the player that he reset his previous franchise with.
The player that I have in mind is 7-foot-2 center Walker Kessler.
Kessler will be 25-years-old next month and could be a long-term solution for the Celtics’ center position. He’s a restricted free agent and it was reported just last week that Kessler could be “pushing his way out” of Utah, per Sam Amick of The Athletic.
It’s worth noting that ESPN’s Tim MacMahon reported that Utah offered Kessler a five-year deal worth around $140 million be he still hasn’t accepted. MacMahon said that there is a “gulf” between Kessler and the Jazz.
Now a simple player-for-player trade involving Brown is easier said than done due to his super-max contract and Kessler still being on a rookie level contract. Boston would need to include other players to make it work or have a third team included in the trade.
It’s important to keep in mind that the Celtics do not need to trade Brown. It just seems likely considering how the offseason has unraveled between Brown and Boston.
With the interest in Brown being surprisingly weak from teams around the league, anything is possible and I wouldn’t be too surprised at this point.
While Brown is coming off a career year where he led the Celtics to the second seed in what was tagged as a gap year due to Tatum recovering from a torn Achilles, Kessler only played in five games after suffering a torn labrum that required season-ending surgery.
Kessler’s recovery is being reported as going well and he’s expected to be ready for the start of the season.
I do think there’s a trade that could send Kessler to Boston without involving Brown. But again, with the way the offseason has gone, it seems like Brown wants to be traded at this point.
There’s a deal that can be made for Brown. But Boston might have to lessen their asking price to get it done in a way that can still benefit them.
