The Boston Celtics manufactured a shocking trade that sent All-Star forward Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers for 35-year-old Paul George and four future draft picks.
Brown, who finished sixth in MVP voting, had the best season of his career in which he led the Celtics to the second seed in what was originally tagged as being a “gap year” due to Jayson Tatum missing just about all of the regular season recovering from a torn Achilles.
Brown finished the season averaging 28.7 points (third-most in NBA), 6.9 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 1.0 steals per game on 48/35/80 shooting splits. He led the league in 2-point attempts per game (16.0), field goals (736) and field goals attempted (1,543).
The narrative around this whole situation hasn’t been because of Brown’s production on the court, but rather some of his comments and actions off the court. And it’s surprising that it’s come to this point considering this is who Brown is and the Celtics know it.
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst had the audacity to express the Celtics didn’t view Brown as had having the best season on the team or in an MVP-caliber as Brown may have thought himself.
“I just know that the Celtics felt that even though Jaylen Brown was talking about himself for MVP or there was this MVP campaign for Jaylen Brown, the Celtics did not feel that Jaylen had the best season on their team. And I don’t mean Jayson Tatum. They felt like Derrick White had a better season.”
For what it’s worth, White did not have a better season than Brown. He actually had the worst shooting season of his career and it’s hard to justify that he impacted winning more than Brown did.
I’m unsure how it got to this point between Brown and the Celtics, but when it comes to this sudden barrage of Brown from the media. Yes, Brown has a recent history with Stephen A. Smith and now with Bobby Marks, but it’s hard to believe that Windhorst wants to be next on that list.
Windhorst is well connected around the league, I’m not discrediting him in that way, but it’s hard to believe the Celtics felt that Brown wasn’t the best player on their team last season.
For whatever reason, Boston traded Brown, but I can’t imagine it’s because of his production, he was the best player on the team last season and it’s not even close.
