Opening Up The Files On The Boston Celtics

Celtics Make Surprising Trade With 76ers, Sending Jaylen Brown for Paul George

The Boston Celtics made a shocking blockbuster trade with the Philadelphia 76ers that sends Jaylen Brown for Paul George and four total draft picks- two first round and two second round- according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

The draft picks Boston received won’t make an impact until 2028.

  • 2028 First Round- could convert to a swap if it favors Boston
  • 2028 Second Round- most favorable of GSW/OKC/MIL
  • 2030 Second Round- most favorable WAS/POR/PHX
  • 2031 First Round- unprotected from PHI

So, the Celtics really only received George in return for Brown in regard to a player that can help the team this season. This move only really gives Boston future draft picks and that is just incomprehensible.

Brown is coming off the best season of his career where he finished sixth in MVP voting and led the Celtics to a second seed in the playoffs without Jayson Tatum, who was recovering from a torn Achilles.

It’s unclear when the disconnect actually happened between Brown and the Celtics after ten-years, but the straw that broke the camel’s back might’ve been when he was included in a possible trade this offseason for Giannis Antetokounmpo; a season in which Brown said was the favorite of his career.

Brown finishes his ten-year career with the Celtics with the third-most 3-pointers in franchise history (1,284), eighth in defensive rebounds (3,013), seventh in steals (684), tenth in points (13,474), eighth in triple-doubles (6), and was a Final MVP. He helped the Celtics reach six Eastern Conference Finals and advanced to two Finals.

On the other hand, George is 35-years-old and has played 78 games in the regular season in the last two years combined. While Brown is right in the prime of his career, George is at the end of his career heading into his 17th season.
