The Boston Celtics originally wanted to collect multiple first round draft picks and a player in return for Jaylen Brown. After days, weeks, months of wondering what is going to happen between Brown and the Celtics, he was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers for Paul George and four future draft picks.
We know how this offseason started with an aggressive trade pursuit for Giannis Antetokounmpo in which the Celtics offered Brown and two unprotected first round draft picks. That ultimately failed, as he chose to go to Miami, but it essentially further came down to contract negotiations.
According to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints, he explains that the Celtics and Pistons and the framework in place for a possible three-team trade with the Rockets, with Kevin Durant to Detroit, Alperen Sengun to Boston, and Brown to Houston. Siegel notes that the Rockets weren’t interested and it never really went anywhere from there.
The Hornets inquired on Brown and were prepared to make an offer package of Naz Reid, Miles Bridges, and draft compensation. However, sources told Siegel that Boston counter offered for Brandon Miller. Mike Scotto of HoopsHype reported that Charlotte offered Bridges to Boston before they agreed to trade him to Phoenix.
The Nuggets kicked the tires on Brown with conversations including Aaron Gordon and Cameron Johnson. But without much draft capital to offer and unwillingness to include Jamal Murray, the negotiations didn’t go far.
In the end, Brown is no longer on the Celtics after ten years. He had a legendary career and is one of Boston’s top players in franchise history. It seems like the Celtics just wanted (needed) to part ways with Brown and they took the best offer that became available to them after the market wasn’t as predicted for Brown.
