Although it’s hard to understand, the Boston Celtics are looking forward to what the future could offer to them after trading Jaylen Brown for 36-year old Paul George and four future draft picks. The full trade is Brown for George and two first round picks and two second round picks.
- 2028 First Round- could convert to a swap if it favors Boston
- 2028 Second Round- most favorable of GSW/OKC/MIL
- 2030 Second Round- most favorable WAS/POR/PHX
- 2031 First Round- unprotected from Philadelphia
George has two more years remaining on his contract and he’s on the books for $57.7 million this season and a $56.5 million player-option for 2027-28. The way that his contract is structured, there isn’t much a difference to the cap with George’s contract versus Brown’s.
The Celtics don’t have intentions of trading George any time soon, according to The Athletic’s Jay King and Sam Amick.
“Though some NBA observers were left wondering if the Celtics had a subsequent move lined up, don’t expect another shoe to drop. George only has two more years left on his contract, one fewer than Brown, but a league source also said the trade was not driven by finances.”
King and Amick also say that the Celtics are expecting these draft picks to be valuable starting in two years for them to use in the draft or in a future trade down the road.
“The Celtics believe that the four picks they received in the trade, including two second-rounders, should all be valuable whether they keep them or use them in a future trade, according to a league source, who, like others in this article, spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private negotiations.”
The most important pick out of the trade for Brown is the unprotected 2031 first round pick. As it said in the report, the Celtics are hopeful that these picks will all be valuable, so Boston is expecting for Philadelphia to be unable to maintain their success and have the roster depleted by 2031. A roster that now includes Brown, Joel Embiid, and Tyrese Maxey.
The addition of George strung up possible trade ideas that Boston could use him in an additional trade down the road to upgrade the roster, as Boston’s been linked to trading for forward Trey Murphy III from the New Orleans Pelicans.
It’s worth mentioning that George is close to the end of his career. He’s 36-years-old and he’s only played more than 50-games twice in the last five years. Even if he’s able have a standout season this year, it would be wise for Boston to move on from him before he’s able to use his player-option after next season.
